Is wheel alignment really necessary after every tire change?

After every tire swap or pothole encounter, someone mentions wheel alignment, but I’ve always brushed it off. Lately though, I’ve noticed my steering wheel pulls slightly to the left, and my tires seem to be wearing unevenly. How do you know when an alignment is truly needed? Is it something you should be doing regularly in Edmonton with all the rough roads?
